South Africa vs Bangladesh ODI World Cup

South Africa will look to continue their hot pursuit of a top-two spot when they play a struggling Bangladesh. This World Cup match #23 will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon.

Barring that little hiccup against the Netherlands, South Africa have looked like a well-oiled machine. Along the same lines, Bangladesh are a team struggling to get going even one bit. It’s tough to see the Tigers make their mark here against a red-hot side. I am putting my money on South Africa posting the highest opening partnership.

  • South Africa posted the highest opening partnership in 3 of their last 4 matches (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have conceded the highest opening partnership in 4 of their last 5 matches (ODIs)
  • South Africa posted the highest opening partnership in 4 of their last 7 matches against Bangladesh (ODIs)
  • South Africa have won 6 of their last 7 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 24 ODIs between South Africa and Bangladesh so far. Of these, there have been 18 wins for South Africa and six wins for Bangladesh.

Three of those six wins for the Tigers have come across their last four ODIs against the Proteas. In the World Cups too, the record is 2-2 with Bangladesh winning the most recent encounter in 2019.

South Africa Form

South Africa are 3rd in the table with six points and a very healthy net run rate. They won against Sri Lanka, Australia and England – all comprehensive wins. The only loss for the Proteas came against the Netherlands.

Batting has been the real strength for South Africa with five individual centuries being scored. Four batters have aggregated 198 or more, a clear sign of their dominating performances.

With the ball too, there has been a consistent effort all across the table. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen have eight wickets each, while Gerald Coetzee has been a silent winner with seven scalps from just three matches.

South Africa Team News

Temba Bavuma missed the last match due to an injury and will replace Reeza Hendricks, if fit. There isn’t any strong reason to change their bowling attack, unless there’s a late injury.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh are 6th in the points tally after Sunday matches, with two points from four matches. Their only win came in their first match of the tournament against Afghanistan. Following that, they lost to England, New Zealand and India.

It is the batting that has let the Tigers down in this tournament. There’s no individual centurion from their team yet, while no player could aggregate more than Mushfiqur Rahim’s 157 runs.

The same perils plague their bowling unit too with three bowlers taking five wickets each. The ineffectiveness of Mustafizur Rahman (two wickets) is a big concern for the camp at the moment.

Bangladesh Team News

Bangladesh are sweating over the availability of captain Shakib Al Hasan, who will replace Nasum Ahmed if fit. Taskin Ahmed could be drafted back in as well, in place of Hasan Mahmud.

Verdict

The market is heavily skewed towards a South African win and there’s little wonder in that. The Proteas have better form coming into this game than the Tigers. I am steering clear of the win market and instead see the opening partnership market as the one with value. Put your money on South Africa winning that battle of highest opening partnership.
