UAE vs West Indies ODI I

It is going to be a historic first-ever bilateral series for UAE against West Indies as they prepare for a three-match ODI series. The first of the matches will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday from 6pm IST.

Both teams have bigger commitments ahead, namely the ICC ODI World Cup qualifier. Yet, it is the Windies who will be under pressure to maintain their favourite tag. Understandably, the market is skewed towards their win, so there’s not much value in backing them. We are instead digging into the individual markets. Shai Hope looks hungry for runs as always and could be the best bet to lead West Indies.

  • Other than Afghanistan, UAE have lost their 15 matches to the current top-10 teams (ODIs)
  • West Indies have won 21 of their 22 matches against Associate Nations (ODIs)
  • The average first innings score in the last 8 matches at this venue is 256 (ODIs)
  • Shai Hope has scored 7 of his 14 centuries in Asia (ODIs)
  • Junaid Siddique has 6 wickets in 3 matches at this venue (ODIs)

Head to Head

These two teams met twice in ODIs, with West Indies winning both times. The last of those matches was played in Harare in 2018.

Three hundreds were scored in the previous head-to-head with West Indies clocking two and UAE scoring one.

UAE Form

This will be the 100th ODI for UAE, who will have one eye on the upcoming qualifiers in Zimbabwe. The idea is to qualify for their third ODI World Cup and if things go well, they could face West Indies in the ‘Super Six.’

The UAE were playing ODIs as late as May when they played in the final of ACC Men’s Premier Cup against Nepal. The last time they played a Test nation was in 2021 against Ireland.

UAE Team News

Rohan Mustafa is back in reckoning after he was cut off from the T20 World Cup squad. Muhammad Waseem will captain the side that won’t have CP Rizwan, who’s also removed from the squad.

West Indies Form

The West Indies were last seen in a three-match ODI series against South Africa in March that ended 1-1. They don’t have happy memories of visiting the UAE, though.

West Indies have lost 11 of their last 12 ODIs in this nation, including the last six in a row. They have also lost 14 ODIs in a row in the Asian continent.

West Indies Team News

Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran will be missing the series after the duo were rested. The likes of Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks will look to make the most of their opportunity.

Verdict

Despite their poor form in Asia and in the UAE, it would be a major surprise if West Indies slip here. The hosts will fancy their chances of giving a tough fight, but there’s not much value in backing the visitors.

I am putting my money on Shai Hope being the best West Indies batter. Put a medium wager also on Junaid Siddique being UAE’s best bowler.
