England had a disastrous World Cup campaign while the Windies haven’t even qualified for that tournament. All roads lead to redemption and both would be keen to start well. Despite so much upheaval, England look fairly strong to start on a positive note. I am backing England to win here.

  • West Indies have lost 12 of their last 14 home matches (ODIs)
  • West Indies have lost their last 4 matches at this venue against England (ODIs)
  • England have won 7 of their last 9 matches in the West Indies (ODIs)
  • Shai Hope top-scored for West Indies in 2 of their last 3 home matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

West Indies and England have played each other in 102 ODIs with 44 wins for the Windies and 52 for England. The remaining six matches ended without any result.

The last time these sides played an ODI was back in June 2019 in the World Cup when England won by eight wickets.

West Indies Form

The two-time ODI World champions created an unwanted history by failing to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup. With the next cycle preparation starting now, they have a lot riding on this team to improve.

Shai Hope-led team has had a few hiccups even before the series started. Shane Dowrich, who has been selected, announced his retirement while the non-selection of Darren Bravo has raised a few eyebrows.

Alzarri Joseph has been appointed vice-captain while Jason Holder and Nicholas Pooran have been left out after they prioritised Tests and T20Is respectively.

West Indies Team News

Uncapped all-rounders Sherfane Rutherford and Matthew Forde have been included and could get a look in for the Windies. Opener Kjorn Ottley is included after impressing in the domestic Super50 Cup.

England Form

England had a tournament to forget in India, crashing out in the group stages. Their title defence fell apart very early and they finished 7th with three wins only.

Two of those have come in their last two matches and Jos Buttler will now be desperate to re-start their white-ball journey. Only six players from that squad have been retained as they start to plan for the next World Cup.

Uncapped Ollie Pope and John Turner will look to get their maiden caps sometime in the series while Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook will be hopeful of a long run to prove their worth.

England Team News

Tom Hartley, John Turner, Matthew Potts and Philip Salt could be the ones to sit out of this match. If the visitors would be keen on an extra bowling option, one of the seamers could play in place of Pope.

Verdict

Both the Windies and England are looking to start afresh and forget about their disastrous last couple of months. In the case of the hosts, it is worse, as they even failed to qualify for the World Cup. England have rested many regulars and despite that, they look strong on paper to start with a win. I am backing them to do the honours while Hope could end up being the home team’s best batter.
