West Indies vs India Second ODI

India ambushed West Indies with their superior spin bowling in the first ODI to win by five wickets. They will look to close out the series in the second match on Saturday at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The losing margin doesn’t quite do justice to how poor West Indies were, in the match. They are unlikely to improve overnight which makes India heavy favourites for this encounter. I am backing the visitors to start well once again – despite another pair expected to open.

  • Indian openers have posted the highest opening partnership of the match in 7 of their last 10 matches (ODIs)
  • West Indies have conceded the highest opening partnership of the match in 6 of their last 8 matches (ODIs)
  • In 7 of the last 10 matches between these sides, India posted the highest opening partnership of the match (ODIs)
  • Gudakesh Motie has taken at least 2 wickets in his last 3 matches (ODIs)
  • Kuldeep Yadav has taken at least 2 wickets in 5 of his last 7 away matches against West Indies (ODIs)

Head to Head

Ahead of this match, there have been 140 ODIs between West Indies and India so far with India winning 71, losing 63 and two ending as ties. The remaining four ended as no results.

West Indies Form

Following their disastrous performance in the World Cup qualifiers, the Windies didn’t show any improvement on Thursday. Their score of 114 all out in 23 overs was an indicator of their poor form.

The hosts did manage to take five wickets but that was against an Indian side that experimented with their batting order.

Gudakesh Motie and Shai Hope were the only bright spots for the hosts in the first match and could once again be lead players for them.

West Indies Team News

Kyle Mayers could be replaced by Keacy Carty while Oshane Thomas could be given a look.

India Form

Indian bowlers were on the spot in the first ODI with spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav combining for seven wickets. Even before they took charge, the pacers took a wicket each.

Captain Rohit Sharma changed the batting order to give the likes of Ishan Kishan, Surya Yadav and even Shardul Thakur much-needed batting practice.

None of them could impress though, which means India may look to experiment once again. It would be interesting to see how the batting order will look, given Virat Kohli didn’t even bat in the first match.

India Team News

Mukesh Kumar impressed on his debut in the first match while every bowler impressed. The only question could have been the decision around Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, although Ishan scored a quick-fire fifty.

Verdict

India’s opening could bear another different look in the second ODI, but their bowling looks strong to stop the Windies from getting a good start. I am putting my money once again on India starting with a better opening partnership than the Windies. With the ball, it could be Gudakesh Motie who could sparkle with wickets.
