It’s matchweek 26 and the English Premier League action promises to be on of interest. The race at the top has become one-sided and looks set to continue that way, while the relegation battle is also proving to be about one spot. With that context, Desibets guides you through each of the 10 games in our EPL Matchweek 26 preview!
Manchester City v West Ham
City are running away at the top of the league with a 10-point cushion over the chasing pack. With 13 straight wins in the league, City look well-placed to continue the streak. West Ham are fourth ahead of this weekend and have been really impressive, but stopping the City juggernaut could be beyond them.
West Brom v Brighton
Still a whopping 11 points adrift of safety, West Brom need to pick up wins straight up. With just two all season long, they have struggled to address their problems, though. Brighton are just four points above the relegation zone, but have played better than that. Expect a dull encounter with under 2.5 goals.
Leeds United v Aston Villa
Just one point separates these two sides, although Villa have two matches in hand. Leeds, however, have momentum with three wins in their last six matches while Villa have lost three of their six. Leeds should fancy their chances of three points here.
Newcastle v Wolves
Sitting just above the relegation zone, Newcastle need to do better than three losses in their last four matches. The Wolves, on the other hand, have won back-to-back matches for the first time since October and are unbeaten in their last four league games. Back them to pick at least one point.
Crystal Palace v Fulham
Palace are coming off a derby win over Brighton, where they were very lucky to pick up three points. Fulham are unbeaten in their last four matches with two wins and draws each. A win here gives the Cottagers a great chance to come out of the relegation zone, depending on Newcastle’s result. Fulham to win.
Leicester v Arsenal
After crashing out of the Europa League, Leicester will focus their energies on the league where they have won three of the last four. With Manchester United facing Chelsea, a win here can give Leicester a leg-up in the top-two race. Arsenal needed a late goal to salvage their Europa League campaign and will hope for some of that inspiration to rub here, as they look to improve from their 11th spot. This could be a tight encounter on the cards with draw a likely result.
Tottenham v Burnley
Five losses in their last six Premier League matches mean Jose Mourinho is under pressure to improve Tottenham’s fortunes. A huge win in the Europa League is a confidence booster and so is their home record of seven wins in the last eight matches against Burnley. The Clarets are coming off a four-match unbeaten run, but Tottenham should run out winners here in a tight match.
Chelsea v Manchester United
The blockbuster clash of the week on ‘Super Sunday’ will be Thomas Tuchel’s first test as Chelsea coach. Having revived their top-four hopes with four wins in the last five matches, Tuchel will hope to keep in touch with the top-four with a win. United have been impressive away from home this season, but the exertions of playing on a Thursday night could be too much for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men. Chelsea could be eyeing full points here.
Sheffield United v Liverpool
With 13 games left and 14 points away from safety, Sheffield look all doomed to drop down. Four losses in the last five, including three in a row have punctured any hopes of resurgence. Incredibly, though, they have more points in the league than Liverpool in 2021. Liverpool have lost four league matches in a row for only the second time in their history and are coming off a derby loss at Anfield for the first time since 1999. They should be desperate to avoid losing five league games in a row for the first time since 1953.
Everton v Southampton
The ambitious Everton side is now just three points off the top-five with a game in hand over every side above them. The highs of a 2-0 win over Liverpool should be weighed cautiously against three straight league losses at home. Southampton have lost seven of their last eight league games and should be an easy opponent for the hosts. Everton to win.
