Manchester City vs Liverpool Preview
Liverpool are at the summit of the English Premier League with their sights set on a record-equalling 20th title. They are eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand. Meanwhile, defending champions Manchester City are hanging by a thread in fourth place and are seventeen points behind the league leaders.
It is safe to say that an eleventh Premier League crown is out of Pep Guardiola’s reach this season. The Cityzens’ primary goal this season will be to nab a Champions League spot and try to finish ahead of Nottingham Forest. Both teams have stuttered in their steps recently and will be eager to regain momentum as they chase their objectives.
Liverpool may have the edge in this fixture according to many pundits but the Etihad has not been a happy hunting ground for the Reds. In the last ten Premier League meetings between these two giants at the Etihad, Liverpool have emerged victorious just once and that win came almost a decade ago.
Manchester City Form
Across all competitions, City have won two out of their last five games. Two of those losses came against Real Madrid in the Champions League because of which Guardiola’s men exited the elite competition.
In the Premier League, they have lost just one of the last five games. That loss came at the Emirates at the start of this month after which City bounced back with a thumping win against Newcastle United.
Manchester City Team News
After losing Manuel Akanji to a muscle injury in the first leg of the Champions League encounter against Real Madrid, City lost John Stones to an ankle injury in the second leg. Both defenders will miss the crucial clash against Liverpool.
Another concern for the defending champions is the fitness of Erling Haaland. The Norwegian was on the bench in Madrid and after the match, Guardiola confirmed that the striker was feeling the effects of the knock he picked up against Newcastle last week.
Liverpool Form
The Reds have not lost a Premier League game since September and are also the only team yet to lose an away game this season.
In the last three away games across all competitions, Liverpool have drawn two and lost one. The stalemates came in the league against Everton and Aston Villa, while the loss came against Plymouth in the FA Cup.
Liverpool Team News
Arne Slot has confirmed that Cody Gakpo may not feature in the clash against Manchester City. The Dutch striker was injured in the Merseyside Derby and has missed the team’s last two matches.
Conor Bradley limped off after picking up a minor injury in the last match against Aston Villa and will be doubtful. Meanwhile, Joe Gomez has undergone a hamstring surgery and could return towards the end of the season.
Verdict
In the reverse fixture earlier this season at Anfield, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo helped Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0. At the Etihad, history backs the hosts. However, the current form and injuries could hand Liverpool their first win against Manchester City on enemy territory for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
