Unprecedented conditions due to COVID-19 pandemic has affected every walk of like and cricket followed suit. The disruption has meant that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled for 2020 in Australia will now be played in 2021. India will host the tournament which will be held between October – November 2021 with the final slated for 14 November 2021.
This will be the seventh T20 World Cup and will consist of 16 teams. India have qualified by virtue of being the hosts, while the top nine teams in the ICC T20I Championship have also qualified directly. These sides are Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. From the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualifier, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman have qualified.
Coming to the favourites, the hosts India are tipped at 3.50 to lift the title. That’s on expected lines considering the conditions on offer and the strength of the Indian Premier League. The inaugural 2007 edition winners India have reached the finals and semi-finals in the last two editions.
Team | Odds |
---|---|
India | 3.50 |
England | 4.50 |
Australia | 5.00 |
West Indies | 10.00 |
Just behind India and a bit surprisingly too are England at 4.50. Fans and analysts who follow the global leagues will not be surprised, though, considering the number of England players making their name across the global T20 leagues. Like India, England have won the World T20 just once (2010) and are the defending runners-up from the 2016 edition.
Speaking of which, we have Australia at 5.00 next in the line. The most successful ODI team of all time is yet to win the global T20 tournament, which is why the focus on Big Bash League is prominent these days.
Away from the favourites basket are the underdogs West Indies offered at 10.00. That is a bit surprising considering the ‘Men in Maroon’ are the defending Champions and have won the title two times, besides reaching the semis on two other occasions. Every franchise in any global T20 league has a West Indian flavour and that should be enough to make you think of backing the Windies.
Keep an eye on Afghanistan, who have never gone beyond round one, and are offered at odds of 34.00. Rashid Khan is the darling of every global franchise league and that is enough to warrant a look at the unheralded Afghans.
