It is an open secret that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the premier T20 tournaments in franchise cricket. Little wonder then that there is so much interest even during the off-season.

The biggest talking point of the week is around the release and retention list by each team as January 20 was the cut-off date for the same. With the need to keep maximum purse for the upcoming ‘Player Auction’ the franchises were walking a tight rope. Let’s look at how each side is going to stack up.

Some of the surprises in the list were Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell released by Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab respectively. Kuldeep Yadav’s retention by the Kolkata Knight Riders was an equally surprising move considering how little game time he got in the previous IPL.
